Renewal of Professional Memberships in 2008

Just renew my professional membership for ACSM and NSCA. That means I have to pay money again.

ACSM credentials are recognized as the Gold Standard throughout the United States and around the world. By obtaining an ACSM certification, your employer knows that you have passed the most rigorous and up-to-date health/fitness and clinical certification(s) that exist. There are many benefits to being ACSM certified/registered.
Employers prefer ACSM certified/registered employees because this ensures a higher standard of knowledge and better and safer service to clients.
An ACSM credentialed individual is capable of working with both apparently healthy clients and clients with chronic diseases and disabilities.
ACSM credentials offer a quality of care that today's society demands.

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCSs) are professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance. They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention. Recognizing that their area of expertise is separate and distinct, CSCSs consult with and refer athletes to other professionals when appropriate.
History
The Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) program was created in 1985 to identify individuals who possess the knowledge and skills to design and implement safe and effective strength and conditioning programs for athletes in a team setting. The credentialing program encourages a higher level of competence among practitioners and raises the quality of strength training and conditioning programs provided by those who are CSCS certified.
Today, more than 21,000 professionals from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds hold this prestigious credential. This diverse group includes strength coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, personal trainers, physicians, chiropractors, researchers and educators. The CSCS is the only strength training and conditioning certification to be nationally accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and has been nationally accredited since 1993.

Approaching 28-yr-old

The day after tomorrow will be my 28th birthday. I have been thinking about something recently.... things about my life, my work, my study...etc

First, i started to realize i am a very lucky one. I have so many mentors up to now:

  • ZZJ when i was studying Bachelor degree, he told me what is important in the university life and how to think independently.

  • Jim Luk when i was studying Master degree, he showed me the way to work hard and achieve the goal of one self.

  • Prof Hong who is my master degree supervisor, though he didn't teach me a lot in terms of knowledge, he showed me what is the quality to being a scholar. He gave me the freedom to try and fail, this is very important training for my future works especially when i face some difficulties. That was a very good training and learning in the last 3 yrs i stayed in Chinese University.

  • Dr Patrick Lau who is my former university teacher, and i have never think about he will become my mentor. He helped me and inspired me a lot in the research road. If you work with him then you will know how determine he is for research.

  • Dr Karim Chamari who i think i met him by luck, or may be by God. He lives in Tunisia and we started our very first conversation through email, talking about some research methodologies. And then 2 years later i went there to meet him and we had very great discussion about soccer, and about life, which both influence me a lot.

At the same time i am thinking about my work, am I doing good enough? What am i working for? Money? or interest? I didnt have the answer until tonight i watched a TV program, and Bill Gates talked about his work. He said "don't work for money becoz that is not the only way to value your work. You should work for your interest and your heart and feel happy and satisfy. Everyone make mistakes, and you have to learn from it and then forget those mistakes and then life will goes on." OK i finally have some ideas. I love my job in HKSI, i love my athletes (most of them i think), i love to work with the colleagues. That's why i feel i am lucky, again. How many people over the world got the chance to do something everyday that they are interested, and can work with those most talented athletes, and at the same time you receive money from that. Karim always say that it is very important to think good about your life. I agree now.

Recently i also think about my girlfriend and i may be the first time think that she should has a better environment and living. These added together and motivate me to step forward. I should spend more time with her and she deserved to have this.

I must say that most of my energy come from my athletes, and thats why i have to write the following in Chinese so that they can read it easily.

BMX dinner at Sai Kung

Dinner with Alex, Steven, and Frank (Steven's BMX coach) at Sai Kung. Pretty much ppl in that restaurant and we decided to sit outside. Um.....the salad there was tasty and huge. I just had one and another cheesecake and then i was so full. Steven tried to draw a BMX track on the paper but seems unsuccessful. Alex was drawing but i can hardly recognize what he was drawing.

Steven will go to mainland for the all city games and i hope he will do well and come back with a medal.

Alex will continue his hard gym training tomo without my supervision coz i will have my annual leave til 24th Oct. During the holidays i have to prepare myself for the ACSM exercise specialist exam.

Alex update

This handsome boy was leg pressing 120kg 1 month ago, and now is 240kg. YES 240kg!!And his peak power from SRM cycling machine improved from 1400W to 1650W, which is >15% improvement.

The left one is Alex, and the right one is Kaka from AC Milan. 90% similar.

Gym training at CUHK

Yesterday went back to CUHK and had gym training with ar wah and Jim. I cant remember the last time we trained together, at least one year i think.

The training was good and we all exhusted after 3 hrs workout. Here are the exercises we trained:

snatch (40kg)

bench press (70kg)

lat pull down (10)

bent-over row (50kg)

full squat (80kg)

dumbbell arm curl (35lbs on each side)

dumbbell chest fly (25lbs on each side)

dumbbell chest press (70lbs on each side)

we were doing the py protocol and the weights stated above were on the heaivest set:

1st set: 12 reps
2nd set: 10reps
3rd set: 8 reps
4th set: 6reps
5th set: 12reps

This is an informal training compared with that i used to have in HKSI. But i like this one becoz after every set we chat a lot and then the next set. Yea...we adjust the rest time by our perceived hardness.

We used to train like this 3-4 years ago, that was the most tiring but enjoyable time i have ever had in the gym (as an exerciser, not coach).

Today my traps (especially T2 muscle from snatch), upper chest, and hip adductor feel sore. Other muscles are ok. You know....usually i dont train my legs (my leg muscles are good and strength enough i think), but just a little bit workout with you guys as a training partner. I think i can go to 100kg next time for the full squat.

Will wait for the next happy training. And i will bring my most important training equipment with me, i.e. my 3yr-old glove.

This is my last sentence:

We have the right direction at the right pace with right people.

The furthest distance in the world
Is not between life and death
But when I stand in front of you
Yet you don't know that
I love you
The furthest distance in the world
Is not when I stand in front of you
Yet you can't see my love
But when undoubtedly knowing the love from both
Yet cannot
Be together
(From Tagore)
這首詩,我中學時期就已經讀過,當時完全不明白。十年後再看一次,領會又深了一點。

ZHANG Rui is back

We trained today for 1.5hrs and after that i stretched for her. Almost made her cry but after that her low back, glut, and hamstrings are loose.

I think TANG Peng will come tomorrow.

YIP Pui Yin beated ZHU Lin

Yippy beated ZHU Lin in 2 straight matches (21-17, 21-19). ZHU Lin is now World No. 3 and got the World Championship Gold medal last month.

I think the super-endurnace resistant training and high-lactic running intervals are both taking effect on her body.

Crazy Wongs

Steven (BMX racer) made this with his excellent Photoshop skill.

Sarah is back!!

Sarah Lee is back and will start training with me tomorrow. Exciting!

She is the first athlete i picked up when i joined HKSI last year. The most tough girl i have ever met in elite sport area.

Come on! Get some muscle and power. And then some more medals...

New toy 2

Though i dont have much time to play, i still buy NDSL. Just to kill the time when i am on public transport. I like the color sooooooooooooooooooooooo much.

New toy

Here is my new toy: the 22inch LCD monitor. It is soooooooooo big. I even have to turn my head when i am using it. This monitor comes with a webcam, build-in speaker....and a hydrolic vertical adjustment of the monitor to suit the sitting height....so cool.

It only costs HK$2400.

I planned to buy a speaker also but i worry that this huge monitor will take too many space of my desk so i didnt buy it. Luckily my old speakers can put directly under the new monitor so i dont have to buy a new one.
